Do I Really Need An Air Purifier? Let’s Chat Pros and Cons…

Have you considered getting an air purifier or dabbled with the question “do I really need an air purifier?” This post is breaking down the pros and cons and whether or not an air purifier is for you.

Have you considered getting an air purifier or dabbled with the question "do I really need an air purifier?" This post is breaking down the pros and cons and whether or not an air purifier is for you.

I’ll be honest, up until a few months ago the thought of purchasing an air purifier had not crossed my mind. There are about a bajillion things out there that you can do for your health and I’m of the opinion that less is more. The idea of adding one more thing to the list kind of made me anxious.

But I’m also of the opinion that experimentation is key. No one can tell you how to be your best self. Those decisions are up to you and require an open mind and a strong intuition to continue or let go of things that do or do not serve you. So when Molekule emailed asking me if I wanted to try out their air purifier I decided it was time I stop writing things off and try it out for myself.

When I posted on Instagram that I got one, I had A LOT of questions about if I really need an air purifier and why Molekule is better than other brands out there. I typically don’t write reviews on my blog, but it felt like this was fitting given how many questions I received. So today that’s exactly what I’m doing. I’m answering this all important question: Do I really need an air purifier? Let’s jump in…

What is an air purifier?

Like food and water, air is an essential quality to our survival. Many of us invest a lot of time and money into our diets and ensuring we properly hydrate, but how often do we think about the air we breathe? So I actually think the more important question here is what are the benefits of air purifiers and how can they help improve our quality of life?

There are, without question, a lot more pollutants in the air now than there were centuries ago? Our world is cleaner, but population size has grown to a point where our emissions globally impact all of us. Toxic pollution affects more than 200 million people worldwide, according to Pure Earth, a non-profit environmental organization. The effects of air pollution on human health can vary widely depending on the pollutant so this isn’t meant to fear monger, only to bring attention to the issue.

So how does an air purifier help? Dust and mold commonly collect in homes and can lead to respiratory issues such as asthma and allergies. Air purifiers remove these toxins from the home in addition to airborne bacteria and viruses to allow for improved breathing and overall health.

Many homes these days come with an air purifier built-in though most are good at trapping particles but not at destroying them. Thus they remain in the filter and continue to affect the quality of your air.

Why is Molekule different?

Molekule is a new type of air filter that comes with two filters: A Pre-Filter and a PECO-Filter. The Pre-Filter captures larger particles like dust and pet hair and slows down Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) on their way to the PECO-Filter. The PECO-Filter (Photo Electrochemical Oxidation) is coated with a proprietary catalyst that breaks down VOCs, bacteria, viruses, and other pollutants at a molecular level when activated by light. So it not only collects particles, but it actually destroys them.

In addition to its proprietary technology, it also has a sleek and portable design that can work in rooms up to 600 square ft. In order to work effectively throughout your home, you can carry the filter to other areas to ensure full-coverage. It’s also SO quiet. With the exception of when you turn it on, I haven’t heard a peep out of mine (we keep it on silent mode).

Maybe this is a little vain, but I love that it’s cute to look at. So many people have commented on how beautiful the design is and it really fits in in our home. Nothing like a big and ugly machine to kill your design vibe.

Is it worth the investment?

Honestly, it’s hard to say conclusively BUT, in terms of its promises, Molekule 100% followed through. It is portable, quiet and effective. It was so easy to move around our home and it really wasn’t a hassle at all. My fear with having an air purifier was that it was going to be another thing on my list of things to deal with. However, that was not the case at all. It just does it’s thing in the background and besides Bodhi’s deep fear of it, it has been super easy to manage.

I will say that my seasonal allergies have been a lot better this season (ragweed is my nemesis) but they definitely still flare up when I’m out in nature. It’s just nice to not feel like I have to wash my clothes and pillowcases immediately as soon as I get home in case I brought some pollen in with me. In addition to the short-term allergy-relief benefits, there are definitely more long-term benefits from breathing cleaner air. What those will be is hard to say right now, but I feel good about this decision. In the short-term I am also looking forward to putting it to the test as cold and flu season approaches.

If you’re in the market for an air purifier, I would 100% recommend Molekule. It’s ease of use, portability and sleek design really put it at the forefront of the market. It is definitely an investment so I encourage you to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision, but the return policy also allows you to test it out before making a final decision.

Will we continue purchasing filters? Yes. Now that I know the benefits of an air purifier and the tiny amount of effort that’s required to have one, it is worth it for me and our family. Only time will tell of its long-term efficacy but I’m willing to take the risk.
