The short version

  • Everything you type into a Health Captain tool, tracker, journal or game stays in your own browser. It is never transmitted to us. We cannot see it, and we could not produce it if asked.
  • The only personal information we ever hold is an email address, and only if you choose to subscribe to the newsletter.
  • We use privacy-respecting analytics to count pages, not to profile people.
  • We do not sell data. We have no health data to sell.

Tools and games: your data stays on your device

Every tool, tracker and game on this site — the health journal, the blood pressure and blood sugar trackers, the medication list builder, appointment prep, the wellness score, and all game progress — saves its data using your browser's localStorage.

What that means concretely:

  • The data never leaves your device. There is no upload, no sync, no account, and no server-side copy. It is not transmitted to Health Captain at any point.
  • It is specific to that browser on that device. Entries made on your phone do not appear on your laptop, and a different browser on the same machine sees nothing.
  • Private or incognito windows lose it when the window closes.
  • Clearing site data deletes it permanently. We hold no backup, because we hold no copy.
  • Anyone with access to your unlocked device can read it. If your device is shared, use the tools accordingly.

Every tool offers a CSV export so you can keep or print your own copy, and a reset control that deletes its stored data.

HIPAA, honestly

Health Captain is not a HIPAA covered entity or a business associate, and we do not claim HIPAA compliance for data stored in your browser.

HIPAA governs protected health information held by healthcare providers, health plans, clearinghouses and their business associates. Health Captain is a publisher. We are not any of those things, and the health information you enter into our tools is not held by us at all — it is held by your own browser, on your own device, where HIPAA does not apply and where its protections are neither available nor relevant.

This is stated plainly because some health sites imply a regulatory protection they do not have. The protection your tool data actually has is architectural: we never receive it.

Newsletter data

If you subscribe to Your Weekly Health Brief, we collect:

  • Your email address.
  • The topic preferences you tick, so the email can be relevant.
  • The date you subscribed and the confirmation of your opt-in.
  • Standard delivery metrics from our email provider — whether an email was delivered, opened, and whether a link was clicked.

We use it to send the newsletter and nothing else. We do not sell, rent or share subscriber lists. Every email carries a one-click unsubscribe, and unsubscribing removes you from the list. Topic preferences are interests you selected, not inferences about your health, and we do not attempt to derive health status from them.

Analytics and server logs

We use privacy-respecting analytics to understand which pages are read and which are not. Where technically possible this is configured without cookies, with IP addresses truncated or discarded, and without cross-site tracking or advertising identifiers. We do not build profiles of individual readers, and we do not attempt to identify you.

Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs — IP address, timestamp, page requested, user agent — for security and troubleshooting. These are retained for a limited period and then deleted.

Cookies and local storage

We use as little as we can:

  • Strictly necessary storage — small preference values such as a remembered unit setting. Without these the site does not work as intended.
  • Tool and game data in localStorage, as described above. This is your data, on your device, and it is never sent anywhere.
  • Analytics, configured to avoid cookies where the provider allows it.

We do not use advertising cookies, third-party tracking pixels, or cross-site identifiers. If that ever changes, a consent mechanism will be in place before it does, and this page will be updated first.

Third parties

Some parts of the site involve other companies: our hosting provider, our email service provider for the newsletter, our analytics provider, and Google Fonts for typography. Blog content is served from WordPress on the same domain. Each of these receives only what it needs to perform its function, and none of them receives data from the browser-stored tools, because that data is never transmitted.

Pages link out to external organisations such as the CDC, the NIH and the WHO. Once you follow such a link you are on their site, under their privacy policy, and we have no control over what they collect.

Children's privacy

Health Captain is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, and the newsletter is not directed to children. If you believe a child has given us an email address, contact privacy@healthcaptain.com and we will delete it.

Because the tools store data only in the browser, a young person using them is not sending anything to us — but a shared device means a shared record, and parents should be aware of that.

How to delete your data

Tool and game data

  1. Use the reset control inside the tool or game itself — the fastest option, and it deletes only that tool.
  2. Or clear site data for this site in your browser settings, which deletes everything Health Captain has stored on that device. In most browsers this is under Privacy and security, then site or cookie settings.

Export to CSV first if you want to keep any of it. Deletion is immediate and irreversible, and we cannot restore it because we never had it.

Newsletter

Use the unsubscribe link in any email, or write to privacy@healthcaptain.com and ask us to delete your record entirely.

Your rights

Depending on where you live you may have rights to access, correct, delete or port the personal information we hold, and to object to certain processing. In practice the only personal information we hold is a newsletter subscription. Write to privacy@healthcaptain.com and we will action a verified request.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes materially, the last-updated date changes and, for changes affecting existing subscribers, we say so in the newsletter.
