What is Levothyroxine?
Levothyroxine is a synthetic version of thyroxine (T4), the main hormone the thyroid gland produces. The body converts it into the more active T3 as needed. It replaces missing hormone in hypothyroidism, restoring the regulation of metabolism, temperature, heart rate, digestion, and energy. Because absorption is easily disturbed, consistency in how it is taken matters unusually much.

How it generally works
The thyroid gland produces mostly T4, a relatively inactive storage form. Tissues throughout the body convert T4 into T3, the form that actually enters cell nuclei and adjusts how genes controlling metabolism are read. Levothyroxine is chemically identical to your own T4, so it feeds into that same conversion system rather than bypassing it.
The pituitary gland watches circulating thyroid hormone and releases TSH to ask for more when levels drop. That feedback loop is why treatment is guided by a TSH blood test rather than by symptoms alone. It also explains why changes take time: after any adjustment, several weeks are needed before TSH settles at a new steady state and a repeat test means anything.

Will levothyroxine help me lose weight?

People treated for genuine hypothyroidism often lose some retained fluid and a modest amount of weight as normal metabolism resumes.
